Desolation by Andrew Walmsley

Photographic zines have been something that has been growing over the past few years and today I received one from my good friend Andrew Walmsley called Desolation. This is the first zine I’ve purchased that isn’t about street photography and I’ve been excited to check out Andrew's work in print.

This is a project that Andrew has been working on for a while, he wants his photos to leave you asking questions about what happened and why did this happen.

The photos presented within the zine show us the footprint of humans and the mess we leave behind us and I think the photos speak more today than maybe they would’ve done 10 years ago. The past year (2020) has been about the virus that’s been sweeping across the planet and in these photos, Andrew shows us that humans are a more dangerous virus than covid could ever be, the human species is today more wasteful than we’ve ever been. The things we own only have value when we first get them and once we get tired of them we throw them away giving no thought to our planet.

When you see these photos you might have a different point of view and I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Andrew shot all the photos using Kodak film and they look amazing, shooting the project on film adds something special to the overall look and feel of the work.

Below I’ve added a few photos that Andrew didn't include in the zine and I’d highly recommend you picking up a copy while it’s still available.
