Woke up this morning (Monday 26th of February) and for the first time in years my neighborhood was covered in snow and for the rest of the week we have the promise of more white stuff and its meant to be really bad in and around London this coming Thursday and Friday, so how will this play out for me?
I woke up Wednesday morning with heavy snow falling in Bury St Edmunds (my hometown), so I sent a text to sixstreetunder asking if it was snowing in Cambridge, the weather app on my iPhone said it was and it was going to heavy all day.
I took a chance and walked to the train station and as you can see from the photo below it was snowing heavy:
5 minutes after I got the train I got text from Sixstreetunder telling me it wasn't snowing in Cambridge, at that point there wasn't much I could about it, I just had to hope it would start snowing. As the train got closer to Cambridge there was less and less snow, just my bloody luck. I spent over 5 hours in Cambridge and it did Snow a few times but not that heavy and with there being nobody out and about I found it hard to get any good street photos. I would like to add that sixstreetunder got some amazing photos on his way to work…..the Bastard (just joking Craig)
Then Friday came round and the weather channel and the BBC weather forecast promised the Beast from the East (where they get these names, god only knows) would arrive and it would be snowing in London all day. So my son and I got up early and headed to the city with the hope of lots of snow. I had some great ideas for photos and I couldn’t wait.
We arrived in London and yes it was bloody cold, the wind was murder, however, no snow again just my luck. I was disappointed, I'd been looking forward to this trip all week and all my dreams of seeing the city covered in the white stuff were gone. We walked from Kings Cross stopping at the British Library and the British Museum, my sons first time in both places, which he enjoyed.
We then headed into the city and decided to have a walk around the shops trying to keep warm and just not bother about street photography, the streets were empty of people and there was nothing to shoot so it didn’t seem to matter. I would like to add that I’ve never seen the streets of London this empty, it was like the opening scene from the movie 28 days later. The photos below show how empty the streets were:
Then just after 2pm, our luck changed……..snow and lots of it.
We spent the next few hours out on street shooting.
I didn’t get many photos but, the ones I did get, I was happy with. I wrote this blog for those who think street photography is easy, it isn’t, there is a lot of work that goes
into getting those photos you see on this blog.
Enjoy the photos
The first 4 are from Cambridge
