It seems a perfect time to talk about my favourite part of the year, the autumn. I love autumn so much, the cold dark mornings and evenings, the rain, the fallen leafs etc it’s a dream for me and I look forward to heading out with my camera during this time of the year. The more I think about it, I would say I spend more days out taking photos than with the summer. The weather doesn’t bother me, the colder the better and yes before anyone says it I know I’m mad.
The autumn light and why do I love it so? I find the sunlight in the autumn to be incredibly harsh, more so than the summer. So this makes for some interesting opportunities, I find myself looking for more shadows or spots of light. Some of these spots can make for interesting shapes and mixing those shapes with peoples shadows I can make something beautiful. Talking with my friend (and amazing street photographer) Christian Cross, he agrees about the sunlight through the autumn and winter, however, he was right to point out that the light is harder to find. But let’s be honest about this and say that street photography isn’t easy and for me at least my best photos are the ones I’ve had to work for.
As most visitors to my blog know I like to shoot wide open (Fujifilm 56mm F1.2) however in the autumn sunlight I like to switch it up and move to F8, making the photos dark and in turn, this draws the viewers eyes right to where they should be. This way the photos have no distractions. Now that’s not to say that I don’t shoot wide open in autumn, as I’m a Bokeh whore lol. But it’s great to try something different, this, in turn, keeps my portfolio fresh.
Anyway time for some photos
