The first 2 days of the week, I’ve been in Cambridge shooting and I would say the light in Cambridge city centre has been very flat and I’ve found myself looking for an artificial light source, shop windows etc. I made it work and I came away with some good photos.
However, for the last few days, I’ve been visiting London and the light has been amazing. I found myself chasing the light, looking for corners with harsh light or strips of light against a wall. I was getting some photos, but nothing that was making me think wow. Then I remembered a photo I took a few years ago in Borough market;
I headed back to the market chasing the light and maybe I would come away with a photo as good as the one above. But I ended up with some very different looking photos, the market was full of strips of light coming in from the roof and I found myself looking to the ground and photographing people’s feet, shoes, etc. Then I walked to another part of the market and started photographing parts of people, the shadows and light worked well together. It's very rare that I take photos like this, but It was fun waiting and seeing what I would capture. One thing I did find was, it's not easy doing this type of photography.
I really had to be ready to take the photo, yes I missed a few good moments but for me, this just adds to the fun of street photography and it's also one of the reasons I keep going out.
I also used the Classic Chrome film simulation from my Fujifilm camera and I found this worked amazingly well. I have been thinking of just using the out of camera jpg’s, but I'll save that for a future blog.
Enjoy the photos:
